I’m sitting in my favorite restaurant, having just finished an excellent mid-day meal. I find I sometimes think better when I’m not home, and it’s easier to come up with lists of what needs done or any number of other things.
I just sent out a newsletter in which I announced I had finished Lynxeen and uploaded it for the pre-order. In truth, I finished it last Thursday, the 19th. It came in at 120,965 words across 47 chapters. My editor has since worked her way through it, and I need to work through her comments before settling on the “final” version.
While I was finishing Lynxeen, though, I realized that there needed to be a book in between Lynxeen and Vorcalix. There were a few threads in the final chapters that would take longer to address than I felt appropriate for the end of a book. As those of you who’ve followed my Randomness here for a while will probably know, I despise Epilogues and Prologues.
If whatever a Prologue or Epilogue contains is important enough to be in the story in the first place, why aren’t they a chapter? When a book I read has them, I skip them to see if they’re truly unnecessary. If they’re not, then that’s a failure on the writer’s part. Sorry (not sorry at all).
The new Book 4 of Shepherd Security Services will be Torvalin, and I already have a cover to upload on my site and for pre-orders. I’ll get to that tomorrow or over the weekend. Torvalin will, naturally, push Vorcalix and Sol back to #4 and #5, respectively.
In other news…
As part of kicking off the Hell Funk that was April and May, I decided I missed having a software Writing Log, like I did once upon a time before I switched to Mac as my primary system. I am going to learn Python and develop a new Writing Log that will work for me, no matter what platform I’m writing on. Python is a programming language that is hailed as being one of the easiest to learn, and it runs on every platform. Windows, Mac, Linux… maybe even Android and iOS.
Once I get the basic functionality working the way I want it, I plan to work up a link between it and this site, so that I no longer have to worry about forgetting my weekly writing updates. Anyone who cares to know will be able to see my progress in near real-time.
Hrmmm… what else?
I recently made a day trip to Cincinnati. A writer friend from out west flew into CVG, arriving late in the evening. Given that they’re a good friend, I drove out to pick them up and get them where they needed to go before returning home. It was an excellent interlude, as we hadn’t seen each other with our own eyes in the better part of a year. A chat with another writer friend carried me through most of the trip home… at least until cell service gave out… and it was an excellent day and evening all the way around.
I think that’s enough for now. If you’re reading this, thanks for sticking with me.
I hope the days treat you and yours well. Stay safe out there.
